Application of Canons of Rhetoric: Principles and Processes that guide the Art of Persuasion in Business Communication

Canons of Rhetoric

The Canons of Rhetoric is a set of principles and processes that guide the art of effective communication and persuasion. Originating from classical rhetoric, these canons were formalized by ancient rhetoricians such as Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. They encompass the following five key components of rhetorical practice:

1. Invention (Inventio)

  • Description: The process of developing arguments and finding ways to persuade. It involves brainstorming and generating ideas, identifying key points, and gathering supporting evidence and arguments.
  • Importance: Invention is the foundation of rhetoric, as it focuses on what to say. It involves researching and choosing the most effective arguments to use in a speech or written work.

2. Arrangement (Dispositio)

  • Description: The organization and structure of a speech or text. It involves arranging ideas in a coherent and logical order to maximize their persuasive effect.
  • Importance: Effective arrangement ensures that the message is clear and compelling. It typically includes an introduction, body, and conclusion, with each part serving a specific purpose in the overall argument.

3. Style (Elocutio)

  • Description: The choice of language and the way ideas are expressed. It involves selecting appropriate words, constructing sentences, and using rhetorical devices and figures of speech to enhance the message.
  • Importance: Style affects the audience’s perception and understanding of the message. A good style makes the content more engaging and memorable.

4. Memory (Memoria)

  • Description: The practice of memorizing the speech or key points. In classical rhetoric, it referred to the techniques used by orators to remember their speeches.
  • Importance: Memory aids in delivering a speech smoothly and confidently without relying on notes. It also involves internalizing the content to speak more naturally and convincingly.

5. Delivery (Pronuntiatio)

  • Description: The physical presentation of the speech, including voice modulation, gestures, facial expressions, and overall body language.
  • Importance: Effective delivery enhances the impact of the message. It involves how the speaker uses their voice and body to engage the audience and convey emotions, emphasizing key points and maintaining interest.

These Canons of Rhetoric provide a comprehensive framework for creating and delivering effective communication, whether in spoken or written form.

Application of Canons of Rhetoric in Business Communication

Canons of Rhetoric can be applied by business professionals to enhance their communication effectiveness, whether it’s through writing compelling emails, delivering powerful presentations, or engaging in meaningful client interactions. These principles help ensure that messages are well-crafted, structured, and delivered in a way that maximizes their persuasive impact.

Group Discussion (GD): Tips to Prepare and Effective Participation

Group discussion (GD) is a test of interactive skills in a group setting. It is a tool usually employed for elimination rather than selection. Organizations make use of this tool to assess the group dynamics of a candidate based on his communication and interpersonal interaction and to reduce the pool of candidates lined up for personal interviews. The strength of a group for a GD usually varies between eight and twelve, and the atmosphere ranges from feigned teamwork and forced camaraderie to unbridled warfare and uncivilized mayhem. While participating in a GD, the candidates are expected to be able to not only articulate their viewpoint effectively but also to understand the other person's point of view while making their point and ensuring that the team as a whole reaches a win-win situation, a solution/agreement that is both feasible and accepted by all members of the team. Thus, a GD is a simulated managerial setting, and its evaluation parameters can be categorized into tw...
